About this event

California’s special education monitoring processes are shifting from a compliance focus to a continuous improvement approach. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) identified for monitoring are now required to develop an annual Special Education Plan (SEP). Now more than ever, LEAs have the opportunity to leverage monitoring processes and the development of the SEP to reveal inequities in their systems and affect real and sustainable improvement. Given the complexities of our school systems, identifying the root causes of systemic inequities can be challenging. To promote meaningful improvement that proves to be sustainable over time, leadership teams must engage in deep, thoughtful, and multi-faceted root cause analysis. This approach to root cause analysis provides key information that will empower school teams to develop improvement plans resulting in better outcomes for students with disabilities.

Please join us for all three sessions in this three-part series.

  • Session I: Mar 1: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
  • Session II: Mar 8: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM
  • Session III: Mar 15: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

Participants will:

  • Discuss key system thinking concepts, with an emphasis on identifying and managing our mental models.
  • Explore three components of a thorough root cause analysis: data analysis, accessing user perspective, and process mapping.
  • Create a root cause analysis investigation plan to inform the development of the Special Education Plan (SEP) and/or other improvement efforts.
